Manufacture of ACCC® Conductors

ACCC® conductors use fully annealed aluminum formed into trapezoidally shaped strands. This is wound around an ACCC® core that must pass in a straight line from its reel through the stranding machine to the take up reel. The trapezoidal layers are laid in place in order to prevent work hardening during stranding. ACCC® core is delivered on standard wooden reels and is stranded onto standard sized take-up reels as specified by CTC Cable Corporation. The technology is within the reach of any astute manufacturer; however, the use of trapezoidal strands makes each strand heavier than the usual round wire. It is necessary to employ stranding bobbins with a greater capacity to enable the stranding of longer reel lengths. The optimal length for ACCC® conductors is between 3 and 3.5 kms for medium and large sizes. Longer lengths are standard for the smaller sizes.
